Dr. Adrienne van Nieuwenhuizen (“Dr. Van”) provides psychotherapy and medication management for adults of all ages. She enjoys meeting patients where they’re at and getting to know them well over time. Her areas of expertise include treating mood and anxiety disorders, trauma and loss, psychosis, as well as major life transitions. When providing psychotherapy, her approach is mostly based on open-ended psychodynamic therapy though she also incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, emotion-focused therapy and mindfulness skills. In addition, she has a particular focus on the importance of planetary health for human health and is interested in supporting patients impacted by climate change and other social determinants of mental health.
Dr. van Nieuwenhuizen’s background includes working in clinical research for several years and then obtaining an MSc in Philosophy of Mental Disorder from King’s College London. This background provided her with an appreciation of the science of psychiatry as well as an awareness of the social and historical contexts of psychiatry. She completed her medical studies at the University of Cambridge and completed her psychiatry residency at UCSF.
